Abstract
The strategy literature contains many models of strategist-archetypes of who the strategist is, what the strategist does, and what makes a good strategist including how the organization and environment enable or constrain the strategist-that guide researchers, teachers, and practitioners of strategic management. However, these models of strategist remain implicit and fragmented across different literatures. The goal of this review is to expose and integrate these models of strategist. To this end, I first describe eight models of strategist derived from 420 articles and 56 books: The strategist as leader, middle manager, analyst, knowledge manager, thinker, innovator, politician, and architect. Second, I argue that these models can be subsumed under the more general model of the strategist as problem solver that emphasizes the deliberate and cognitive while recognizing the emergent and evolutionary nature of strategic management. Third, I offer a research agenda on the model of the strategist as problem solver. Overall, this paper provides insights for researchers, teachers, and practitioners of strategic management by offering an integrative view of the strategist as problem solver.
