Valuation of flexible capacities in intraday and balancing energy markets

Abstract
We compare the value of a flexible capacity on short-term electricity markets, specifically the intraday market and the balancing energy market for the German market area. 30 minutes prior to delivery, intraday trading is split between the four control areas. The different liquidity in these areas impacts trading opportunities and, consequently, the value of flexible capacity, which is considered in the valuation. The valuation itself is carried out analogously to a financial option. The analyses revealed that in the three more liquid balancing areas, the value of marketing on the intraday market and the balancing energy market is comparable, i.e., market participants would be indifferent in which market to bid. Only in the less liquid TransnetBW area is marketing as balancing energy more profitable.
Abstract (De)
Wir vergleichen den Wert flexibler Kapazitäten auf den kurzfristigen Strommärkten, insbesondere dem Intraday-Markt und dem Regelenergiemarkt im deutschen Marktgebiet. 30 Minuten vor Lieferung teilt sich der Intraday-Handel auf die vier Regelzonen auf. Die unterschiedliche Liquidität in diesen Zonen beeinflusst die Handelsmöglichkeiten und somit den Wert flexibler Kapazitäten, was bei der Bewertung berücksichtigt wird. Die Bewertung selbst erfolgt analog zu einer Finanzoption. Die Analysen ergaben, dass in den drei liquideren Handelsgebieten der Wert der Vermarktung auf dem Intraday-Markt und dem Regelenergiemarkt vergleichbar ist, d. h., die Marktteilnehmer wären indifferent, auf welchem ​​Markt sie bieten. Nur im weniger liquiden Gebiet von TransnetBW ist die Vermarktung als Regelenergie rentabler.
