For the management of manufacturing networks, the analysis of country risks is crucial. Operations managers must identify and manage risks arising from adverse country developments at an early stage. This paper presents a framework to map these risks and their impact on the manufacturing network. Item type:Publication, Network Improvement Initiatives: How to Deploy a Network Strategy(2024-07); ; This paper explores how manufacturing firms deploy network strategy by developing network capabilities in international manufacturing networks (IMNs). Drawing from the resource-based view (RBV), network capabilities, and strategic initiatives literature, we analyze 109 strategic iniativies from 11 IMNs, classifiy them into 20 initiatve types, and assess the effort required for implementation. The types range from building new sites to establishing knowledge exchange networks. We identify patterns between capability type, capability gap size, and implementation time. Item type:Publication, Strategic site reasons re-visited, digging deeper in the rationale of global manufacturing networks: An empirical study from a headquarters perspective(2022-08); ; The site role concept developed by Ferdows and empirically tested by Vereecke et al. discusses the specific advantages of globally distributed manufacturing plants. It conceptualizes the primary reasons for manufacturing sites to exist–the strategic site reasons. This article presents the results of a multiple case study further examining the reasons to establish a site, the sites' main advantage today, and related contingency factors. The findings show that the main reasons to establish or acquire a manufacturing site are access to low-cost labor, new technologies, and reliable transportation. Item type:Publication, Mapping and Managing Country-Level Risks in International Manufacturing Networks(2025-02)Nowadays, multinational corporations (MNCs) operate international manufacturing networks (IMNs) with globally dispersed plants. The networks, trimmed for efficiency, have significantly increased the competitiveness of MNCs over the last decades. In times of global turbulence, however, the networks face growing risks triggered by geopolitical conflicts, economic crises, and environmental disasters. For the management of IMNs, the analysis of country-level risks becomes crucial. Global operations managers must map and manage risks arising from unfavorable country developments at an early stage. Therefore, managers require simple tools that reduce the complexity of today’s networks and allow them to integrate a country risk perspective into IMN management. Previous academic literature has largely neglected risk management in IMNs. Although some research exists on operational issues, the strategic management of country risks has been overlooked so far. This thesis aims to close this research gap by exploring the mapping and managing of country risks in IMNs. To this end, this thesis proposes a management framework, the so-called Plant Risk Matrix. The matrix quantifies the changes in the IMN and its environment, thus enabling the identification and assessment of country-level risks. Two studies were conducted to examine country risk management in IMNs empirically. The first study employs nine cases to examine how the Plant Risk Matrix is operationalized and set up. This study also reveals which risk patterns MNCs exhibit and which measures are used to mitigate these risks. The second study, a single case study, investigates in detail how country risks can be integrated into IMN management. Therefore, a country risk management process is elaborated, and enablers for the successful integration of the process are presented. The practical contributions of this thesis are threefold: (1) the Plant Risk Matrix allows global operations managers to map and manage country risks using a simplistic tool. (2) The empirical findings on the operationalization and application of the matrix show how to set up the matrix and mitigate identified risks. (3) The country risk management process provides guidance on how to integrate a risk perspective and the matrix in IMN management. Two theoretical contributions complement this: (1) the novel approach expands the previously scarce literature with a systematic method for country risk management in IMNs. (2) This thesis contributes to understanding the evolution of IMNs, as the matrix makes data-based tracking of plant and network changes possible.Type:doctoral thesis - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
