Abstract
It has been observed that incumbents who are confronted with technological discontinuities frequently react with inertia. We contribute to the literature on collective incumbent inertia with a model that aims to explain why incumbentscollectively react with inertia when faced with discontinuous change. To explain this phenomenon we develop a model that combines theories of mimetic isomorphism, incumbent position reinvestment and resource dependency. Finally,we argue that the relationship of mimetic isomorphism and collective inertia is moderated by the transparency of the organizational field.
