Abstract
Starting from the insight that there is no one size fits all approach to business process management (BPM), an exploratory analysis is conducted in order to gain knowledge about how organizations deal with the process-oriented management concept. Four content-related factors of business process management are identified: the degree of performance measurement, the maturity of process management, the impact of process managers, and the utilization of established methodology and standards. Based on these factors, cluster analysis is applied to identify four classes of BPM approaches: the BPM freshman, the BPM intermediate, the BPM collectivist, and the BPM individualist. Arranging those classes according to three dimensions yields a BPM typology matrix. Based on this classification, it is possible to provide systematic methodological advice for the implementation and advancement of BPM.
