Abstract
Through this paper we wish to make a contribution toward an understanding of the sustainability of social entrepreneurial enterprises (SEEs) and their financing. We begin with an analysis of the sustainability of social entrepreneurial enterprises (SEEs) in conjunction with the economic value added through their activities. First we shall argue that the key to sustainability of an SEE lies in an appropriate statement of its mission. Indeed, we shall show that a sustainable mission is a prerequisite for sustainability of the SEE itself. Since SEEs pursue primarily social goals to produce "social value added", the economic value added through their activities is often overlooked. This is unfortunate, since value is left untapped which could potentially be used by the SEE to realize its goals. We take a "customer value"-approach to analyse the economic value added through sustainable SEEs. Finally, we propose ways in which this customer value can be converted into cash flows to the SEE.
