Abstract
The far-reaching consequences for individuals and organizations make technostress a crucial issue of management. What impact does leadership have on the negative consequences which may result out of the use of ICT? Management constitutes an influential factor in employee’s work environment and a powerful leverage for organizations to effect employee’s behaviour, attitudes and emotional state. We see considerable potential to extend research into the role of management to balance the consequences of technostress. In our study we conducted a survey questioning 491 salespersons using ICT in their work environment. Based upon their responses we tested a structural equation model studying the impact of two forms of leadership on individual and organizational outcomes. We differentiated between supervisor influence on ICT use and general leadership. In our model we tested for the impact of ICT specific supervisor influence on ICT-strain (i.e. technostress) and on general strain (i.e. work exhaustion). Additionally, we tested for the influence of general leadership on work exhaustion and on job satisfaction as an organizational outcome. The data show that leadership has a significant influence on work exhaustion and on job satisfaction. The impact of supervisor influence on ICT use on technostress and on work exhaustion was not significant. The results lead us to the interpretation that leadership constitutes a potential instrument to influence negative outcomes of the use of ICT in sales. The role of ICT specific supervisor influence needs to get further investigated. Researchers, practitioners and professionals are presented with a discussion and implications of the findings.
