Abstract
Maturity models are a viable means to integrate diverse dimensions for measuring, designing and controlling complex, multi-faceted artifacts as they occur in the field of information systems. To support the systematic improvement of business intelligence functions in organizations, we have proposed a business intelligence maturity model and a maturity measurement instrument in prior research. In this study, we further refine this model and devise a comprehensive evaluation strategy. Through cluster analysis on the maturity assessments of 92 organizations, we identify four characteristic business intelligence maturity scenarios and select one organization for each scenario. For the model evaluation, maturity insights obtained from in-depth case analyses of these four organizations are compared with the results of our measurement instrument for the same companies. A close match between our model's maturity assessments and the maturity levels from case analyses is expected to provide evidence that the maturity model correctly assesses business intelligence maturity.
