Abstract
Given the high elasticity of social dynamics, pedagogical professionalism cannot be reduced to a rigid set of prescriptive methods. There is the necessity to view professionalism as contingent within historical and cultural contexts. For the current generation of future teachers and those instructing them, visual practices have become increasingly ‘naturalized' across a range of social developments and in the distribution of the sensible (Rancière). Theoretical approaches and practical methodologies based on the visual are increasingly relevant to teacher education, particularly where cultural difference and notions of otherness are concerned.
As part of a larger project on visual culture and education, I would like to present a small-scale empirical study executed in a course on the topic of migration at a teacher-training institute where German is the native language and the topics of migration and cultural difference are central concerns to the future working conditions of our students. The study inquires into the relevance and effectiveness of visual and mixed-media based didactic methods to determine their suitability in cultivating professionalism and awareness in pedagogy. It compares varied modes of self-evaluation, thematic exposure through sources from the visual arts and humanities, and practical application of teacher-studies methods. Self-reflection and reflexivity were integral to the content of the course on migration, and thus figure prominently in the study.
