Abstract
In times of increasing global competition, companies and transport policy have to work hand in hand and align their activities to assure the long-term viability and liquidity of European industry and retail companies as well as logistics service providers. The trend of globalization led to the fact that a multiplicity of European industry and retail companies is based on global and multinational supply chains. These global supply chains are traditionally intermodal: usually vessels or air cargo serve as the main transport while pre- and subsequent carriage are fulfilled by road or rail transport. However, there are other significant global trends, like the trend of the application of new information and communication technologies, the trend of urbanization and the ongoing sustainability debate, which influenced the structure and characteristics of recent value chains. Moreover, these trends led to problems for the traditional structures.
