Abstract
Markets are increasingly affected by the speed of technological change, shortened product lifecycles, and volatile customer needs. As a consequence organizations respond to these changes by investing large sums of money in the continuous development of innovative new products to anticipate the current market conditions. However, the vast majority of developed innovations cannot be successfully established in the market and therefore fail. But the cause does not consequently lie in the nature of the product itself, but rather sales is usually the bottleneck for the successful commercialization of a new product. It is the personal sales process at direct customer touchpoints that sales representatives have to master, where innovations and customers come together. However, practical experience shows that selling innovative products implies complex challenges and puts established routines to the test. For this reasons, this dissertation addresses a definite need for research and deals in depth with the question of which challenges in the personal selling process of innovations occur and how practice handles them to ensure the successful sale of new products. In order to derive relevant findings, the research study is conducted in the context of the automotive industry with the focus on the marketing of highly innovative electric cars, which prove to be a suitable research subject due to their comprehensive novelty and their niche existence yet having a high social relevance. Within a research collaboration with a world leading manufacturer of electric vehicles the researcher is provided with access to a unique research environment and exclusive data. As a result of a Germany-wide explorative case study with a high degree of methodological triangulation, a conceptual model is derived that makes the complex research phenomenon more tangible and categorizes as well as systematically structures the relevant empirical evidence. The model is composed of various multidimensional concepts and aggregated categories and puts them in causal relationships to the personal sales process of innovations in order to understand the resulting sales success in the end. The results obtained and the implications derived from the comprehensive qualitative analysis make a valuable contribution to both practice and science. They provide orientation in a field of operation that is critical to success, as well as insufficiently understood and therefore provide a basis for interdisciplinary research projects and practical initiatives to revise individual innovation sales approaches.
