Publication10 Years after Tufte's "Cognitive Style of PowerPoint": Synthesizing its Constraining QualitiesPowerPoint is a tool that is very often used in organization to visualize knowledge. It is seemingly simple but a complex tool which is not 'neutral' but has enabling and constraining qualities. Despite its pervasiveness, research on PowerPoint is scarce, fragmented and often polemic. Given its omnipresence and importance, a more appropriate understanding of the tool is needed. This paper aims to contribute toward this goal by conducting a literature review on the constraining qualities of PowerPoint in a systematic manner. The results are synthesized into 12 constraining qualities and classified into two levels: the tool itself and the enactment of the tool in the performance. Through the synthesis and description of the constraining qualities and their negative effects, this paper aims to provide guidance to practitioners for the preparation, performance and reception of PowerPoint presentations, with the ultimate goal to select and use this presentation tool more consciously, or to select other tools for knowledge visualization.Type: conference paperDOI: 10.1109/IV.2013.44

Publication“35 Candy for a T-Shirt?”: How a Currency’s Dissimilarity to Money Decreases Purchase Intentions( 2021-05)Money is much more than dollars, pounds or yen. The digitization of money has led to the emergence of numerous virtual currencies (i.e., company-issued currencies for purchases within the company’s ecosystem). Billions of US dollars are exchanged using such virtual currencies every year. Still, most pricing-related research focuses on payments using official currencies. In our article, we build upon payment mechanism and processing fluency research to predict consumers’ purchase intentions with virtual currencies. Study 1 addresses how perceived money similarity can be predicted by semantic similarity measurements. In Studies 2 and 3, we replicate real-world purchase scenarios to show how a virtual currency’s dissimilarity to money decreases purchase intentions through both the decrease of processing fluency and the increase of pain of payment. Managerial as well as theoretical implications are discussed.Type: conference paper

Publication“35 Pearls for a T-Shirt?”: How a Virtual Currency’s Dissimilarity to Money Decreases Purchase Intentions( 2022-12-06)Money is much more than dollars, pounds or yen. The digitization of money has led to the emergence of numerous virtual currencies. Countless virtual currencies have emerged through the digitization of money. Billions of U.S. dollars are exchanged using such virtual currencies every year. Still, most pricing-related marketing research focuses on payments using official currencies. In our article, we build upon payment-mechanism and processing fluency research to predict consumers’ purchase intentions with virtual currencies. Study 1 addresses how perceived money similarity can be predicted by semantic similarity measurements. In Studies 2 and 3, we replicate real-world purchase scenarios to show how a virtual currency’s dissimilarity to money decreases purchase intentions through both the increase of processing fluency and the increase of pain of payment. Publication3D-Printing: How Additive Manufacturing impacts Supply Chain Business Processes and Management ComponentsPurpose The business implications of additive manufacturing (AM) are explored; specific focus thereby lies on the impact of AM technology adoption in customized parts production. Design/methodology/approach Based on two explorative case studies from the hearing aid industry, the impact of AM technology adoption on supply chain business processes and management components is analyzed. General systems theory and a supply chain management framework serve as theoretical underpinning. Findings Not only primarily manufacturing firms’ internal processes and management activities, e.g. in material flow management, are affected by a changeover to AM, but also business processes and management components relating to the supply- and demand-side of a company’s supply chain. Research limitations/implications It is proposed that AM’s ability to economically build custom products provides the potential to alleviate the common dilemma between product variety and scale economies. Practical implications Manufacturing firms are encouraged to consider the potential effects of AM on supply chain processes and management components when deciding about the adoption of AM technologies in the manufacturing of industrial parts. Original/value The research adds to the widely unexplored effects that AM technology usage in customized parts production has on supply chain business processes and management components. Moreover, the general lack of case studies analyzing implications of AM technology adoption from a supply chain perspective is addressed. The resulting propositions may serve as a starting point for further research on the impact of AM in engineer-to-order supply chains. Keywords: additive manufacturing, 3D-printing, supply chain management, customization, engineer-to-order, business processes, management componentsType: conference paper

Publication40 years of stakeholder approach in management education. A single case study of the Darden School of Business.( 2024-08-10)40 years ago, Edward Freeman's book “Strategic Management: A Stakeholder Approach”, was published as a textbook for courses in business policy and strategy. The stakeholder approach gained popularity in practice and became a major theoretical lens in business ethics as well as an integral part of management education. While the literature covers the application of the stakeholder approach in the various management disciplines (e.g., finance, accounting, management, and marketing), little is known about its integration in teaching practices, its implications and benefits in business education. This single case study aims to address this gap by examining the historical and disciplinary development of the stakeholder approach at Darden School of Business, where Freeman has been teaching for 37 years. Based on qualitative research methods, the study uncovers cross-disciplinary benefits of the stakeholder approach and identifies untapped potential for the further improvement of management education.Type: conference paper

Publication5th scil Trend Study 2015/2016 - What are the trends for learning professionals in corporate learning?( 2015-11-26)What are the trends of tomorrow in corporate learning? The swiss centre of innovations in learning (scil) repeated its trend study for the fifth time in order to investigate challenges in education management, changes for learning professionals and getting the important topics on corporate learning. Therefore we used an online questionnaire for data collection from learning professionals in different companies, industry sectors and countries. Based on a proven reference frame of challenges in education management quantitative and qualitative data was collected. Due to the fact that the survey has just been completed, data analysis is still in progress. We want to use the EAPRIL conference 2015 to discuss our results with practitioners of corporate learning because we are convinced that they should know trends in order to estimate and evaluate them. Thereby we want to contribute to professionalization of learning professionals.Type: conference paper

PublicationA 'Networked Thinking' Approach to Business Model DesignCrafting a viable business model for an organization requires profound knowledge, good decision making skills, and intuition. Scientific literature provides business model designers with a spectrum of supporting techniques: cases, component-based approaches, taxonomies, conceptual models, causal loop diagrams, and design patterns. However, these techniques only provide valuable support during specific steps of the design process. There is also a tendency towards focusing on model-internal consistency, while neglecting the organization's internal dynamics and external business environment. Against this background, this study proposes a more integrated approach which spans the entire design process and comprises assumptions about the organization's specific business situation. This six step approach is based on the principles of networked thinking. It has the potential to help decision makers, business model designers and entrepreneurs to structure the business model design process and visualize, communicate, discuss, and evaluate different business model designs.Type: conference paper

PublicationA Balanced Scorecard Approach to Measure the Value of Enterprise Architecture(Via Nova Architectura, 2007-06-06)
;Stutz, Matthias ;Lankhorst, Marc M.Johnson, PontusThe value returned by Enterprise Architecture (EA) is being viewed with increasing consideration by researchers and practitioners. They struggle to justify the EA investments made. Quantifying the Enterprise Architecture benefits has always been a challenge because measurements and real value delivered can not often be expressed in simple technical oriented metrics only.In this paper we suggest a multi-perspective framework, based on the concept of Balanced Scorecard (BSC), for providing guidance about where to identify and quantify the value of EA from the perspective of management. A derived methodology is used to localize a few selected Key Performance Indicators (KPI's) for measuring the benefits of Enterprise Architecture that help practitioners to design and implement the suggested framework. -
